In this post we share what we have learned regarding the health benefits of read hibiscus tea and a spicy Jamaican Red Hibiscus “Sorrel” punch.
Red hibiscus tea is treasured throughout Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas and for its tart and fruity taste. This beautiful plant also offers a plethora of health benefits, confirmed through scientific research. Also known as sorrel in West Indies, Flor de Jamaica in Central America, Byssop in West Africa, the health benefits of hibiscus tea range from high blood pressure control due to its diuretic properties to digestive support as a laxative and anti-spasmodic properties in both the stomach and uterus.
Our favorite recipe shown below includes the dried hibiscus petals as shown in the photo above. But you can also use red zinger tea available in stores or online. If we are not using the flower petals readily available in our local health food and vegetable markets, we use Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger Herbal Tea.
Jamaican Style Sorrel Red Hibiscus Punch
This punch offers many added health benefits with spices such as ginger and cardamom known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties, as well as cinnamon thought to help stabilize blood sugar levels.
1/2 cup of dried red hibiscus/ sorrel petals*
1 tablespoon grated ginger**
1 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup fresh orange juice (skip if not recently squeezed!)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg (really just a tiny bit)
1/2 cup honey or coconut sugar OR (2 tablespoons of Stevia for sugar free option, it’s very good!)***
Mix all dry ingredients in a large pot or bowl, steep in 4 cups hot water add, the lemon and orange juices as well as the vanilla and sweeteners. Let steep for 20 minutes to draw out the flavors and properties of all of the ingredients. Strain the liquid to remove the petals and bits of spices. Makes 4 Servings. Enjoy hot or let cool and add ice for a cool punch.
* If you cannot find the red hibiscus/ sorrel petals, use 4 teabags of Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger Herbal Tea
**If you enjoy spicier foods add extra ginger and a dash of cayenne pepper for a kick!
***Red Hibiscus is quite tart and may require a lot of sweetener. To maximize health benefits we recommend using a combination of Organic Traditions Stevia Leaf Powder (without the additives found in Stevia products like dextrose) and Raw Manuka Honey Paste with strong anti-bacterial properties and other health benefits.
